Instead of Intel, Lenovo has equipped AMD as the processing unit in this laptop which is intriguing. This Lenovo laptop comes with 3 models, one of which is the AMD Ryzen 5 one.

Size & Design

In a classic black attire, the Lenovo ThinkPad A285 is made with the carbon and magnesium body. The matte black texture of the ThinkPad gives it a neat and tidy look, with a dedicated touch feel.  The laptop weighs only 1.12 kg, which makes it extremely portable to carry around. You can easily travel with it without feeling any burden to pack it in your bag. The laptop hinge can rotate up to 180-degrees, which means you can lay it flat on the ground or desk. On the keyboard, you will find a red contrasted pointing stick in the middle which allows moving the cursor without touchpad.

Display

For the display, Lenovo adds 3 options for the ThinkPad A285 where you can choose IPS and TN panel both. Our recommendation would be the IPS panel which will be much better for viewing angles. The maximum brightness you can witness from the display is around 300 nits with IPS panel. Also, the sRGB colour gamut is 86% that means you are getting vivid and bright colours with great colour accuracy.

The small 12.5-inch screen is packed with a full HD Resolution of 1920 x 1080 and doesn’t showcase any screen tearing. The pixel density that lasts around this Resolution is 176 PPI which isn’t bad and isn’t great. Also, Lenovo A285 uses PWM for regulating screen brightness.

Performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad A285 comes with an AMD processor instead of the usual Intel Core processor. The AMD Ryzen 5 processor equipped in this laptop is packed with the base frequency speed of 2 GHz. The maximum turbo speed potential of this Ryzen processor is around 3.6 GHz, seemingly enough for average complex tasks. If you have never used the AMD processor range, and have been always the Intel user, this laptop will not disappoint you.  The laptop easily managed day to day multitasking, without having the system to slowdown. You can run medium-heavy programs and files on this processor, with a good speed and overall performance.

The RAM integrated in this laptop is massive for intensive users and comes in combination of solid-state drive storage. Having an SSD storage means you are going to have minimum to zero lags while performing tasks, running programs or working on files. The huge RAM and SSD combo is phenomenal for those who are always into heavy multitasking and need to work through hefty software.

Not to forget, the GPU incorporated in this AMD laptop is the integrated or on-board graphics, which is what most of the average laptops contain. It supports the full HD Resolution to its best for regular everyday usage, especially if you like watching Netflix or YouTube.

Battery

The Lenovo A285 packs 48 WH battery which sustains around 8 hours, for the average WLAN timing. The usual laptop battery timing will be around 7 to 8 hours, if you are just using the Wi-Fi. However, with consecutive video playback you can fetch around 4 to 5 hours of battery from the laptop. Additionally, the battery charges up to 85% in almost 50 minutes. So, on the overall basis, this one has quite a good battery powerpack which will not make you plug the laptop unnecessarily.

Ports

Having a lot of ports is always good for any laptop, and so you will enjoy the connectivity options in the A285. But we aren’t getting any Thunderbolt port in the port selection. One the right side, it equips a display port, two USB Type C ports, a mini-Ethernet connector, USB Type A, an HDMI and stereo jack. While the left side integrates another Type A port, a security lock, a smartcard reader and a fan exhaust.

Verdict

In a nutshell, the Lenovo ThinkPad A285 brings a lot of features within its chassis. From its AMD processor equipment to its massive RAM and SSD, the laptop turns out to be sufficiently powerful. This 12.5-inch model complies with the full HD display for a better viewing experience. The only factor that it can get you lose on its mediocre graphics or average build. The overall performance of the laptop isn’t bad at all, for daily tasks or above-average software and applications.
